J Joshua Bigham

I am a photographer, student of life, and a lover of art. I always felt I was an artist at heart but had to experience other “things” in life before I could realize that dream. After spending many years in the financial services industry and subsequently retiring from my second career serving in the United States Army, I finally had my chance to fulfill that dream. I have come to realize those experiences, while not all pleasant helped to shape me into who I am today, and ultimately helped to shape my art. I earned a Bachelor of Science in Economics from Longwood College in 1997, an Associate of Science in Photographic Technology from Saint Peter’s College, and I’m currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts at East Carolina University.

Small Kite Big Kite Dogwood and Dunes   Katya Hutchinson   “Connection” implies many layers of meaning, especially when  pertaining to  international exchange.  There are physical, cultural, and interpersonal connotations of the word.   When designing my kite, “Dogwood and Dunes ”,  I  attempted  to explore some of these meanings to create something that stood-out as unique, but  also  successfully created a union between the culture of the Emirate nations and North Carolina.    While my  initial   concepts  relied on a connection of land and sky  (featuring  clouds and earth  symbols) I decided that  connection  was already being made by the very act of flying the kite itself- we would already be bridging the land and sky by lifting our tethered kites from the ground.    I settled on a simple concept that merged elements of North Carolina aesthetics, and cultural aesthetics of the Emirates.     Process wise, I stuck to something simple. Amber Baggette - Muscle Person and Pinky Promise

Muscle Person Pinky Promise Red Pinky Promise Black For my small kite, I went for the connection   theme. In my kite, it shows six hands, in three rows and two in each row. It shows the two hands coming together in a “pinky promise” and then to “sealed it with a kiss/sealed it with a stamp”. At the hands’ wrists, you can see lines and swirls coming out, I made those to represent the red string of faith.   I first thought of “pinky promise”, because in most of our childhoods when we had a connection with someone and trusted someone, we would promise each other with a pinky promise. It is a reference to a more innocent time.  I got the “sealed it with a kiss/sealed it with a stamp” was when I used to watch Japanese animations and watching other Asian dramas where the phrase came up a lot. When you do a pinky promise and seal it with a kiss it is like sealing the deal on what you have promised. I thought it was a cute meaning and could be used in this connection

Tiana Robinson - United Hands and Connecting Circles

United Hands Connecting Circles The essential theme for this class and the main project is the idea of being connected.  Both of my kite designs  had something to do with the connectedness of the UAE and the United States .  With my larger kite, I wanted to depict two hands holding the national flowers of the US and   UAE,  which   is  the Rose and the  Tribulus   Omanens e . The UAE’s national flower can be used for medicinal  purposes.   The color of the Tribulus  is believed  to be  the color of friendship and the second reason which is related to the first one is that the flower is available in only one color that is yellow, so for them,  it is the sign of equality and brotherhood .    The United States national flowe r being the Rose  represents  life, love, d evotion and eternity .  By doing this  I wanted to have that image to depict  the connectedness between the two cultures with something as simple and fragile like a flower.
